Rick Beyer has a unique combination of experience in higher education and business. As a former college president and board governance chair, technology CEO and senior operating executive of a $1 billion public company, Beyer has consistently been at the forefront of industry-leading initiatives and has a history of leading organizations through change and growth.
Beyer is the managing principal of AGB Institutional Strategies, which focuses on higher education trends, challenges, and the development of new models for colleges and universities.
With over twenty years on higher education boards, Beyer has cultivated a depth of governance experience. Most recently, Beyer served as a board member at AGB. While on the AGB board, Beyer served in a number of capacities including chair of the compensation committee, chair of a special task force on new business opportunities, and chair of the AGB development and finance committees. Additionally, Beyer serves as trustee emeritus of Olivet College, where he has served as the chair of the board, and has served on the board of trustees at American University, Washington D.C.
Beyer served for a three year special project as president, president emeritus at Wheeling Jesuit University. During his presidency at Wheeling Jesuit, he organized the community to develop a strategic master plan for the institution. This included gaining broad base support from many constituents, including unanimous endorsement from the faculty. At a time when the institution was challenged with enrollment, fundraising, and overall strategy, Beyer’s presidency included record-setting enrollment, expanded student services, and the doubling of alumni giving participation.
During Beyer’s tenure at Wheeling Jesuit, academic support and investment expanded with the launch of programs in engineering, performing arts, health science (online) and environmental science. Beyer also initiated and led four fundraising projects including a campaign for a new Downtown Facility for the physical therapy department, a new athletic turf field, a townhouse project for graduate housing, and a new music recital hall. All major funds for the project initiatives were secured through new benefactor relationships.
Beyer has more than twenty years of senior executive operating experience including serving for more than eight years as an executive and then as a corporate officer at Trimble Navigation, a $1 billion public company (NASDAQ:TRMB). Beyer also served as president and CEO of TracerNET, a wireless sensor business which was acquired by Trimble.
During Beyer’s business career, he was involved with the oversight and implementation of ten different merger and acquisition transactions. Beyer has served as general manager at Rockwell Collins, On-Board Computing division. He was also part of the senior management start-up team at QUALCOMM (NASDAQ: QCOM) serving as vice president, marketing and sales for OmniTRACS, which became the country’s most successful mobile satellite communications provider.
